Description
The ACLU does not take on many individual clients and typically represents clients on notable civil rights/liberties cases only. They do not handle cases outside this region and generally do not assist with criminal defense or post-conviction appeals, family law/child custody, property disputes/building code issues, tax problems, landlord-tenant issues, complaints about lawyers or judges, denial of workers’ compensation or unemployment benefits, or employment matters.

May submit a complaint by:
- Calling 415.621.2488 for English and Spanish. Open Monday – Friday (10am-12pm) & (1pm-3pm).

- Sending a 1-page letter (due to limited capacity, additional pages will be discarded) to: Civil Liberties Intake Program, ACLU Foundation of Northern California, 39 Drumm Street, San Francisco, CA 94111.
Process
After you call in, the organization will tell you next steps. Typically, they need at least 3–4 weeks, and sometimes much longer, to respond.
Notes
Collect key information in advance if possible: case numbers, names of key people, court dates and deadlines, documents related to the issue, and any questions you have.
